Overcoming Inertia

Choreographer and lecturer Tamara Thomas will be staging her first independent show this weekend when the curtains roll back on Overcoming Inertia’. The dance showcase will be presented at the School of Dance Studio Theatre, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts on Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6.

Overcoming Inertia presents a tapestry of movement from varied genres and styles. The showcase combining new and older works from Thomas’ repertoire will features hip-hop, Guinea dance, Sabar, Jamaican folk. Thomas is a lecturer at the Edna Manley College.

A release sent out by Tamara Thomas Dance, explained that Thomas’ pieces sometimes “straddle the fence of re-envisioned folk forms” and sets them agains jazz and spoken work. The dances treat with love, community, ancestral reverence and perseverance.

Each show will be followed by a talk allowing the audience to engage with the choreographers and dancers.

Tamara Thomas Dance will also be holding lecture demonstration on Friday July 5, at 1:00pm in the School of Dance Studio Theatre.

Tickets for the show attract a cost of $1,000 on Friday and $1,500 on Saturday when there will be a cocktail reception following the performance.
