New Live Series Birthed at Wicky Wacky
The wind coming off the Caribbean sea gusted through the grounds, while the sea frothed and foamed on the beach below. Wicky Wacky, a quaint sea-side venue in Bull Bay, St. Andrew, which evokes words like irie and ital, is alive with the sounds of Reggae and dub. The gusting winds, the night sky and the music make for a relaxing combination. It’s Friday, July 6, and the start of a new live music series Wicky Wacky Routz.
Wicky Wacky Routz is being staged by the aptly named up and coming band One Drop. The tactic is not a unique one. Despite the resurgence of reggae bands, regular live events are still relatively far between in Kingston. So, rather than wait for others to produce live events and invite them to perform, aspiring bands have been staging live music series which allow them to develop their own material, build an audience and showcase other emerging talent.
The night’s fare was varied offering both interesting and mundane performances from solo performers as well as other bands. One Drop was among the more entertaining performers for the night. The band delivered an energetic set that suggests that they are a band worth keep on the radar.
Another highlight of the evening was the dub-stylings of the UpRising Roots Band. Uprising Roots displayed dubs keen ability to simultaneously evoke relaxation and energy. The band delivered a sometimes stirring performance displaying a willingness to experiment with the sound and form of dub.
The inaugural event followed a tribute to the late Augustus Pablo. The venue’s more established Wicky Wacky Live, which takes place on Sunday nights, is currently on break and returns September 2, 2012. Wicky Wacky Routz will take place the first Friday of each month from 8pm to 12pm.
