Caribbean Tales 2013 opens with Gems of the Caribbean

Christopher Laird's No Bois No Fraid opens 2013 Caribbean Tales Film Showcase

The Annual Caribbean Tales Film Showcase which stretches over a month, has added a new element to its roster of screenings, Gems of the Caribbean. Gems opens the 8th staging of Caribbean Tales, on August 17 with films from Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and St. Lucia. The Showcase will however have its official red carpet Gala opening at the Harbourfront Centre on September 4 with the screening of Christopher Laird’s No Bois Man No Fraid, a film journeys into the stick-fighting Gayelle.

Caribbean Tales 2013 will feature 40 films in competition, comprising 10 feature length films and 35 shorts hailing from 25 countries. The official competition segment of the showcase takes place at the Harbourfront Centre.

Gems of the Caribbean takes place from August 17 - 30 and features a diverse range of films including Kevin MacDonald’s award winning documentary Marley, Samuel Stewart’s animated comedy ‘Jerk Chicken’ as well as a suite of short films on carnival ‘The Making of a Monarch’ (James Knight), ‘Mas Man’ (Dalton Nairne), and ‘Come With It, Black Man’ (Tamara Tam Cruickshank). Gems of the Caribbean is staged at the Canadian National Exhibition.

The film showcase will also continue to host its five-day intensive Incubator programme. The incubator, running from September 3 - 9, offers training for up and coming filmmakers and culminates in a Pitch Breakfast at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on September 8, 2013.

The Caribbean Tales showcase will also include community screenings of select films. The month of screenings run August 17 to September 14, 2013.
